protected nesting area

Some areas of the Fire Island beach are marked to prevent people from disturbing the Piping Plover nests.

Little do they know that the family of fox ignore the signs. They leave their little footprints all over the beach and there is not one Piping Plover around.
Signs won't keep the fox from their dinner!

Fox on Fire Island
~~~
Our boat went into the water this weekend and today we went to Fire Island.
At this time of year, it is empy! No people!
It's magical
... and the wildlife is used to a winter with no human contact.
This fox just sat, relaxed, and looked at the camera.
After awhile, he got up and moved.
I feel so fortunate to see this in my life!
Fire Island Fox
Fire Island Fox, originally uploaded by Alida's Photos.
~~~

Went to Fire Island today for a picnic lunch in the fog. Yes, it was foggy.
We waited for the sun but it never came, not until we got home at about 4:30pm.
On Fire Island, out in this sand/shrub area, we saw this red fox, just resting.
He didn't move as we took over a dozen photos.
 He also barely opened his eyes.
We thought that maybe he was sick.
He didn't run away and we wouldn't get any closer.
It is so wonderful to see wildlife so close to home.
We just kept walking......
