Walk through the neighborhood...

Pond, originally uploaded by Alida's Photos.

Here is a photo of a pretty little pond in my neighborhood. My husband and I took a walk and I brought the camera. Big mistake! I had to stop every 50 yards to take another shot. What kind of exercise is that? I must exercise and lose some weight. (Who doesn't say that?) I spend too much time on the computer and not enough time exercising.I really think my eating habits are too bad; I like and eat lots of vegetables. Well, we'll see. More walking, less computer!

I just can't resist taking photos of sunsets. The entire bay becomes red and reflects the light from the sky. Even the birds look red. It is so serene and makes the world seem beautiful and peaceful, which of course, we know it is not.

Deer

Deer on Fire Island. They can be a problem.
They are not afraid of people and will come very close for something to eat.
They do run, when they feel threatened, but most people just feed them.

SUDOKU

A new puzzle: SUDOKU. I saw in the paper today that the latest rage in Japan is a new puzzle call sudoku. Basically, it is a puzzle that is solved by logic. It is all numbers but you don't add or subtract, just figure out where each number goes. You complete the grid so that each row, column and 3-by 3 box contains the numbers 1 through 9. Well, I solved it. It took about 3 hours but I enjoyed this much more than a crossword and I'm sure I'll get faster as I have more experience and get familiar with the way it works out. I'm not showing you the solution but you can see that by "process of elimination" you can narrow down the choices, just like a crossword. Try it!

Sunday's Calm...

Windy Saturday...

The wind picks up. What a change in the weather Saturday. We could not sleep on the boat another night. By 9pm the wind died down but we slept soundly at home.

Sun-RISE

SunRISE. An absolutely beautiful morning. You must enlarge this photo to really see how the color reflects off the water.

Sunrise, not sunset. This is about 5:30 in the morning, looking east.

Davis Park walkway

We went to Davis Park on Thursday. It was very hot and sunny, almost too hot to stay in the sun. We slept on the boat overnight.

Wednesday evening...

Another sunset on the bay.
We took a boat ride after dinner. It was very warm and calm on the bay. Work crews left equipment at Barret Beach. Not sure what they will be doing...maybe dredging since it looks like the sand is winning the battle as usual.
We met some really nice people and since it is such a small world, found out the husband is the person who remodeled our kitchen and added the sunroom before we owned this house. Wow, it was the kitchen and sunroom that sold us.
They also warned us of the flies that were invading the ocean side of Fire Island. This happens sometimes due to the wind direction and hatching of those horrible flies that can bite something fierce. It doesn't happen often, but once or twice a summer is enough!
We sat on the bay side, watched the sunset, drank champagne and of course, I took pictures. Beautiful night!

My newest activity...

I enjoy taking photos and post some here and some on other sites.

old photo...

I am posting this old photo because it is one of my favorites. The year is 1985, and my boys are 3 and 5 years old. Cute, huh?
It was one of the happiest of times. This was taken at Disney World when the world was full of promise and the boys were young and innocent.
They were eating ice cream and laughing and so happy!
Enjoy your children; they grow up too quickly.
My sons are now 23 and 25 years old, and really good people. Like all adults, they have their problems and realize that life is not Disney World. Sometimes it's painful. As a parent, it makes me sad.
I can still give them ice cream and get them to laugh, but life is often difficult, as we adults know. Good luck boys and know I love you.

Monday, I'm back.....

Well, I never really left. I've just been busy. We've had company for the last week and have been running and entertaining.
My husband's brother and his wife came to New York for the first time from Indiana. Both were born in PA and moved to Indiana as young adults. Busy with work and raising a family, they never made the trip to NY before.
So, we were the tour directors and tried to show them some of Long Island and New York City.
I think we were successful!
I'll post some pictures of our adventures.
We went sailing one night, drove out to Orient Point through the North Fork wine country, went into Manhattan and saw Times Square, Rockerfella Center, then took a tour of NY Harbor by boat, barbequed on the beach here on Long Island, watched sunsets of course, and took a boat ride in the fog to see fireworks that we couldn't see.
It was very eventful and fun. I think my in-laws loved it!

New York City like a tourist...

Brooklyn Bridge from the water. We took a NY Waterways harbor tour to show our visitors (brother-in-law and wife, from Indiana) NYC. It was their first time here.
Great way to see New York for the first time.

Patchogue Fireworks

Fireworks over the Great South Bay.
Beautiful night for a "picnic-on-the-boat" dinner of chicken and wine...while we watch the sun go down and the Fireworks begin.
Fireworks started at 9:30. In this photo, you can see just one boat in the light of the fireworks but the horizon is filled with lights from boaters.
It was a beautiful night and Patchogue did it right!

Fireworks in Patchogue

Last night the town of Patchogue had a fireworks display over the Great South Bay.
They were the Grucci fireworks which around here is pretty special.
Their firework display is top class and spectacular. Grucci is a family run business, a Long Island institution and one of the best. They are the company that does the fireworks for the 4th of July, Macy's display. They are very well known and were right here in Patchoque. My friends and I and my husband went out on their boat to watch. We had a great time. Here are some of the photos...

Sunset from Sayville. Tonight was the parade to honor the men and womem who work for the Fire Department. The streets were lined with people and everyone was cheering for these hard working people, who give their time to the community.

Lilies for Lillian

We planted lilies this year...for Lillian. Her friends called her Lily; we called her Mom.
My mother died May of 2004, just one year ago. I wanted to write about her on the anniversary of her death, but it was too painful. We planted the lily bulbs in the fall in a very special place. It was my brother's idea for the plaque. (I thought that was kind of morbid, but he surprised me with it, so it's there.) My mother is not buried there. Her body was buried in a cemetery in Brooklyn, where she grew up and spent her entire life. My father is buried there too.
These lilies are in my backyard. Why there? Well, there is a story.
Lillian spent the last two months of her life with me. Up until that point, she was 88 years old, and lived alone in Brooklyn. My father died in 1994. Anyway, her illness came suddenly, and after testing, doctor visits, hospitals, and such, we found out she had colon cancer that metastized to her liver. There was no hope. They gave her just a few weeks to live.
I could not have her go to a nursing home...knowing that this was the end of her life. My husband, who is a good, kind person, agreed. So she came here.
Well, if you knew my family you would understand. The entire family was here (we are five siblings) almost every weekend. We celebrated her life. We cooked, laughed, drank, danced...and told her we loved her.
I think she was happy.
She died after two months.
Well, I almost forgot the story. While she was here, we were having a patio replaced. It was something we had scheduled for a long time. I was going to work in the day, a nurse's aide came for a few hours. I was a teacher so I came home by 2:30.
Anyway, I told my mother in the morning that I forgot to tell the workers I wanted a certain shrub moved, not discarded. When I came home from work, I saw it was moved to the desired spot. My mother had told the workers while I was gone. Now you have to understand that at this point she could barely walk. She couldn't eat and lost lots of weight, but she got up, before the nurse's aid was here, to talk to the workers. They told me the story.
Well the shrub died, so we planted lilies. And that's the story. Aren't they beautiful?

My Profile

Bio: Alida Thorpe
~~~
My camera has always been required gear for my journey through life. I was born in Brooklyn, moving to Long Island, New York as a young adult. After a lengthy career in public education, I began using photography as a way to appreciate my surroundings and share my love of the outdoors. Nature and wildlife, traveling, and boating, fit perfectly with my love of photography.
More recently, my husband and I became full time Florida residents, and my creative path has led me to mixed-media creations. I am on a new journey to create art and express my creativity through collage and abstract works. My art is a culmination of my photography and the new pursuit of mixed-media creations.
Sailing: July 4th
Our friend Dave invited us to go sailing for July 4th. We hesitated at first. The Great South Bay can be very hectic with boat traffic on the holidays...but we never pass up an invitation to go sailing. The weather was perfect, so even with all those other boats out there, it was a beautiful day! Enjoy the sailing pictures and don't forget to check Alida's Photos for additional photos.
