Fishing off Orient Point

The Jenna Lynn II, out of Connecticut, is fishing off the shores of Long Island.

We took a sailing adventure to Block Island and saw this on our return.

The gulls racing over us in the sky were the first clue that something was happening ahead. 

We soon saw the Jenna Lynn II!

Sunset fishing on the Great South Bay....

First day of "fluke" season and we had to go fishing. 

Didn't catch anything but the weather was beautiful and the sunset- spectacular!

Well, it was a beautiful evening, one of the warmest on the water so far this season.  

The complaint of sport fisherman is that this year the fluke requirements are a 21 inch minimum size and 2 per person. 

It's almost impossible to catch anything that size anyway. 

Years ago you could fill a cooler with fluke, which is probably one reason why there are none left!  

The clam boats would line the bay in the 1970s and now there are only one or two boats on a given day. 

I recognize the boats so it's the same two or three men.  

I don't know what the answer is, but I hope my grandchildren will be able to fish someday!

Last Boating Days

The last boating days are here as we enter the month of October.

The days are colder and daylight hours, shorter.

Today, Sunday, it is raining here on Long Island.  :-(

Of course there will still be fishing days this month and next,  which is a totally different "ball game" all together.

On social boating days like the photo above, you cruise out into the bay, eat some snacks, feel the warm sunshine on your face and socialize. 

You can smell the fresh air and watch a few boats go by. 

Sometimes when boating we would cruise over to Fire Island, just three miles across the Great South Bay. 

There, we can get off the boat and take a walk along the sandy ocean shore.

But on "fishing days" which are possible even in cold weather, you wear warm clothing and jackets and hats, and fish! 

...and you hope you catch something. 

While you are fishing, you watch other boats to see if they are catching anything!

So, these are two entirely different experiences.

With both you enjoy the fresh air and sea breezes. You get away from the house and the chores and have a pleasant day.

Me? I like both.

I like being on the water and enjoying the fresh air and sunshine, whether I'm socializing or fishing, whether it's cold or hot or in-between.

It just is a great way to spend a day!

Hmm, I don't like boating in the rain though, which is why I'm home on the computer writing this right now!

There are many advantages to living in the towns and villages of Long Island’s South Shore. There are abundant beaches and marinas as well as national, state and town parks. 

One of the wonderful recreational activities on Long Island is fishing. 

Many towns have piers or docks for the casual fisherman. 

There is also the fishing fleet with boats for charter at Captree State Park, in the town of Babylon.
Captree is a fisherman's paradise and a place to take the family. 

The park features a boat basin with charter boats available for fishing and sightseeing. 

It has fishing piers where families can share this outdoor activity and a picnic area and snack bar/restaurant if you would like to buy something to eat.
Some of the fishing boats stay in the Great South Bay and others go out the Fire Island Inlet into the Atlantic Ocean. 

Whether you are experienced fisherman or a novice, there is a boat for you. 

There are half or full day boats charters to suit your needs and budget. 

Be sure to check out the schedules and prices before making plans. 

There are a variety of fish running in the bay and ocean off Long Island. 

In April and May you can fish for flounder; April through December, striped bass and May untill September, fluke.

Directions: Take the Robert Moses Parkway South. At the end of the Robert Moses, head east following the signs. As with any state park, there is a parking fee; if you have a New York State Empire Pass the parking fee is waived.

Galapagos Fish Market

Amazing to see, the pelicans and even a sea lion were waiting for the scraps from the fish cleaning counter.

All I could think of was that in New York, the Board of Health would have stopped this long ago.

Well, we ate fish and didn't get sick, so I guess it was not as bad as it looks!

We loved the trip, the people and the food and everything that told us it was not the USA.

We went fishing the other night, and watched the sun go down.

Beautiful!

Fishing to me is not just the activity of catching some fish.

In fact, we caught a King Fish and a Sea Bass, which we ate for dinner.

I then went to the farm stand and got some fresh corn and local tomatoes, a head of Boston Red Leaf lettuce....all picked fresh off the farm.

Yummy!

A real farm fresh dinner with fish from the bay! To me, a perfect dinner!

I really enjoy the time on the water...the feel and smell of the salt air...the connection to nature.

Birds flying overhead. Fishing jumping. The sunset.

The Great South Bay in September is practically empty of pleasure boats.

The only boats out there are sport fisherman or sailors.

No crowds or boat traffic.

Just me and nature!

I love it! And I love Long Island for those reasons!
