sunset fishing

Sunset fishing on the Great South Bay....
First day of "fluke" season and we had to go fishing.
Didn't catch anything but the weather was beautiful and the sunset- spectacular!

Well, it was a beautiful evening, one of the warmest on the water so far this season.
The complaint of sport fisherman is that this year the fluke requirements are a 21 inch minimum size and 2 per person.
It's almost impossible to catch anything that size anyway.
Years ago you could fill a cooler with fluke, which is probably one reason why there are none left!

The clam boats would line the bay in the 1970s and now there are only one or two boats on a given day.
I recognize the boats so it's the same two or three men.
I don't know what the answer is, but I hope my grandchildren will be able to fish someday!

Montauk Point

Montauk Point, Long Island
Fog is not unusual....Montauk is at the end of Long Island, away from the mainland, surrounded by water. After all, fog is part of the nautical environment.

Clear day in Montauk

You can see many fishing boats....and in this photo, the Coast Guard Station.

Playing on the River

Sunset on the river, from a "jon boat"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The fragmities light up from the setting sun...
Our new toy, a jon boat, is a small row boat with a relatively flat bottom.
It's perfect for rowing up the river, since the water is so shallow at the north end.
It is always an adventure since the wildlife will surprise us everytime.
See the photos below for the swan nest and friendly puppy, both taken from the jon boat.
Did I mention I love Long Island?
