Fishing off Orient Point

Prime Time 3, originally uploaded by Alida's Photos.

We took the ferry from Orient to Connecticut and drove to Rhode Island for a three day mini-vacation. The weather was as horrible as it's been for the last month....rain and clouds and on the cool side for June.

We passed this boat, the Prime Time 3, filled with guys who were fishing. From the look of the gulls flying overhead, I guess they were successful!

Dave & Cathy

Busy weekend with Father's Day, my birthday and a wedding.
We managed to survive it all and have fun.
I'm sorry I couldn't get out to Coney Island to see the Mermaid Parade, but there were only two days in the weekend. Oh well.....
Dave & Cathy were married at the Stony Brook Yacht Club and we all had a great time.
Don't they look happy?
Now it's time to continue the celebration of my birthday. After all, shouldn't we celebrate the birthday month? I'll be posting more photos soon of the road trip to a new destination.
Road trip.......Rhode Island!

Happy Father's Day!

Dad in store, originally uploaded by Alida's Photos.

My most favorite photo of my father, taken in the 1940s.
My parents owned a store in Brooklyn, where I grew up. Isn't he good looking?
He loved those little Italian cigars!

He died in 1994 and I still miss him.....

Green-Wood Cemetery

Green-Wood Cemetery, originally uploaded by Alida's Photos.

Went today to the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn

It is a big part of New York's history and very interesting to visit. In the early 1800s, it was visited by 500,000 people a year. This was before the time of Central Park and gave city planners the idea to create a city park.

The trees today are some of the oldest and largest and best maintained in the area.

The tombstones and mausoleums are old and beautiful!

From the official website:

"Founded in 1838 as one of America’s first rural cemeteries, the Green-Wood Cemetery soon developed an international reputation for its magnificent beauty and became the fashionable place to be buried."

Fox on Fire Island

two fox rest, originally uploaded by Alida's Photos.
~~~
Walking along the beach, we could see a family of fox resting in the dunes. As we approached, other walkers with a dog, were coming from the other direction. The dog chased them away before we could get better photos. I've been going to Fire Island for many years and have never seen so many fox. Is there an increase in the population? Or am I just more aware? I now notice fox tracks in the sand all the time!
Shipwrecked on Fire Island
shipwrecked sand, originally uploaded by Alida's Photos.
~~~

A sailboat washed ashore on Fire Island at the Water Island beach.

It became grounded last week in the fog. A crew of workers has been digging out the keel but it is slow going. When the tide comes up the boat gets buried further into the sand.

We went over to Fire island early in the morning to see what was happening to the sailboat that was shipwrecked last week. Workers were there and the plan is to move it out at high tide and sail it back to Newport, Rhode Island.

Great South Bay, Long Island, NY

Just a busy day on the Great South Bay.
We have not had enough good warm weather this May, but summer is almost here. In three weeks summer will officially begin.
